Las Ninas Gustan los "Cheerleaders." (The Little Girls Like the Cheerleaders.)

2004, watercolor on paper, 8"x16"

Collection: Artist's

Coachella Valley, California: fourth graders are dashing about a field playing soccer. Some of the girls happily become "cheerleaders" for the occasion. Two of these three young cheerleaders have mastered the "routine." The third one is working hard, and will soon be with them.

Organic Unhappy Child

2006, watercolor on paper, 12' x 10"

This painting began as a free spirited movement of pencil on watercolor paper with only one rule: all lines have to be curved (organic). As chance would have it, an ungainly child's face presented itself, and the face had a distinctly sad countenance. I continued to develop the composition!

Dance 93, Egon Madsen

2004, graphite and wax crayon on paper, 16" x 14"

Collection: Ross Nannauck III, Petersburg, Alaska

There are amazing books in the Petersburg Public Library discard pile. I stumbled across a book of the greatest male dancers of the past and present. I tried to capture their expressive movements using graphite and wax crayon on paper.

Councils, Boards, and Commissions can effectively communicate their feelings about an issue!

Commuters

gouache/watercolor on paper, 18" 12"

As a young boy, I frequently commuted to downtown Boston on the MTA subway trolleys. At times, the condition of a good number of passengers was painfully obvious.

A Man Enjoys Mahler's Fifth Symphony

pastel on paper, 20" x 18"

Collection: Matt Bryner, Petersburg, AK

Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, my favorite, has stirring Allegros and an emotional Adagio; as I contemplate another painting, Mahler and I become the subject. Turn on the CD player, turn up the volume, and get out the pastels!

Detained for Questioning, Mazatlan, Mexico, 1998

2001, watercolor/gouache on paper, 14" x 12"

I had arrived, via ferry, at Mazatlan, Mexico, and proceeded down the exit ramp. At the end of the ramp, stood a stern military officer and several alert, armed and dangerous soldiers. The officer surveyed the disembarking passengers. I passed scrutiny and moved forward, however to my left was a narrow hallway, and there stood eight Indian women and children; they had been culled from the crowd. Pathetically silent, they awaited their fate; it seems the rebellion in the Chiapas region had reached far north to Mazatlan.

Racism, U.S.A. 1998, James Byrd Jr.
